Introducing the Virtues and Valor series part 1 of 8 serialized stories that tell the tale of a daring rescue and escape. Each episode is told from the perspective of a different heroine, and each heroine is inspired by a true WWII heroine.

The Third Reich Seeks to Extract the Information She Alone Knows

MARIE GILBERT and her elder brother flee from Vichy France after the Gestapo arrest her father for suspicion of aiding Jewish children to escape the oncoming fascist front. Once in London, Marie is recruited into an experimental all female cohort dubbed the Virtues, a collection of seven extraordinary women with highly specialized skills.

Known only by her code name, TEMPERANCE, she is trained to operate a wireless radio and returns to her beloved France. With a new identity, Marie clandestinely communicates vital intelligence directly back to Headquarters but unwillingly attracts the attention and apparent adoration of a handsome but ruthless Nazi officer, Oberleutnant LEOPOLD SCHÄFER.

As the H-hour to execute their daring mission draws ever closer, Marie plays a deadly game of cat-and-mouse with the unrelenting and merciless young Lieutenant Schäfer and the Nazi soldiers under his command.

TEMPERANCE'S TRIAL is part one of eight serialized novellas entitled the Virtues and Valor series.

Seven valorous women — different nationalities, ethnicities, and social backgrounds — come together as a team called the Virtues.

In 1941 Great Britain a special war department assembles an experimental and exclusively female cohort of combat operatives. Four willing spies, a wireless radio operator, an ingenious code breaker, and a fearless pilot are each hand-picked, recruited, and trained to initiate a daring mission in Occupied France. As plans are laid to engineer the largest prison break of Allied POWs in history, the Nazis capture the Virtues' radio operator. It will take the cohesive teamwork of the rest of the women to save her life before Berlin breaks her and brings the force of the Third Reich to bear.

Some find love, some find vengeance, and some discover the kind of strength that lives in the human heart when all they can do is rely on each other and their shared belief. Courage, faith, and valor intersect but, in the end, one pays the ultimate price.

Introducing the Virtues and Valor series by Hallee Bridgeman. Eight serialized novellas, each inspired by real people and actual events, reveal the incredible story of amazing heroines facing the ultimate test of bravery.

Temperance Trial Episode 1 of the Virtues and Valor Series eBook Hallee Bridgeman Gregg Bridgeman

Temperance's Trial is set in WW2, 'Temperance' being the code name of a radio operator in a team of all-female undercover Allied operatives.
Bridgeman's story is engaging and interesting, taking us from Marie's (aka Temperance's) flight from France, to the end of her training in Great Britain, then back to France as an undercover radio operator. Her main secondary character, a German junior officer, is an interesting study as I wondered whether his devotion to Hitler's cause is as strong as he makes out, or if he MIGHT end up being a hero of the story in the end.
While I found the story interesting and appreciated the historical detail, I must admit that the story left me wanting MORE- more time to get to know Marie, more detail of just what her undercover operations entailed, and more of an idea of just how Marie ended up on this elite team.
Perhaps some of this is rectified in the rest of the series- Temperance's Trial felt more like a first chapter than an entire novel, and the rest of the books (judging by the synopsis) continue and presumably complete her story.

Temperance Trial Episode 1 of the Virtues and Valor Series eBook Hallee Bridgeman Gregg Bridgeman Reviews

Hallee Bridgeman has created a new serialized novel in my favorite genre. As much as I love WWII stories I had never heard of the 7 women from all walks of life who gave up their lives and safety to help defeat the Nazis. These stories are works of fiction but historically accurate and will keep you on the edge of your seat. As the first novella in the series, Temperance (Marie Gilbert) will keep you turning pages as under her hidden identity, she sends coded messages from Occupied France. To make things worse, a German lieutenant pursues her, looking for a romantic relationship. Is he sincere or are they watching her?
Temperance is just long enough to keep you up late but get you to work on time. It will leave you anxiously awaiting the next book and bring back the atrocities of WWII in a new way. I especially love that at the end of each book is a short chapter telling us about the courageous woman each book is based on.
In 1940 Marie Gilbert and her brother Edward fled France as the Nazi Security Forces captured their father. 1941 finds Marie as part of a group of women called the Virtues in England known to each other by code names who have come together to help end the war by working with the resistance. The seven women are from different backgrounds and different nationalities but have a common Christian faith. Marie, code name Temperance, trains as a wireless operator adept at sending and receiving coded information. Working as a seamstress, Marie goes back into France with her wireless equipment to work in covert operations. So begins the serial Virtues and Valor. This novella is excellent, suspenseful, realistic writing. You will want to read the entire series of seven stories.
The “Inspired by Real Events” section at the end gives the stories of Eileen Mary Nearne and Florence Violet McKenzie who are the true heroines that inspired this story. If you are confused by any of the foreign phrases or words, there is a translation key at the end. There is an interesting description with photos of the actual vehicles of the period. There is also a Reader’s Guide with suggested questions making this an excellent selection for a book club.
I received the book from the author by way of The Book Club Network (bookfun.org) in exchange for an honest review.
After reading and enjoying many of Hallee Bridgeman's books, I did not hesitate to order Part 1 of this series (for free) as well as purchase the other 7 parts at $2.99 each. This is actually a review of the entire series. First of all, although not as riddled with errors as other authors heavily relying on electronic proofreading, this series had several areas that required some analysis as to the meaning because of spelling and grammatical errors. Secondly, and most importantly, these books do not stand alone although the author seems to think they do. Further, each book in its entirety is short....between 2 and 3 hours to read the entirety of the book. A minimum of at least 25% to 30% of each book is not the "story". Instead it is several pages of history depicting the individual who inspired each book (which WAS interesting), plus a list of the characters and something about each one - which was repeated in each book, a dictionary of terms with few differences also repeated in each book, "about the author" which was repeated in each book and so forth. Additionally aggravating was the need to "bring the reader up to date" on the prior book at the beginning of each book, as well as an obvious cut and paste of pages and pages of material from the prior book. Without a scientific calculation, I would guess that each "book" was far less than 50% original text which required between 60 and 90 minutes to read... and I do not consider myself to be a fast reader. It bothers me that I paid $21 to read this story which should have been in one less expensive (and annoying)book. I am sorry that Hallee Bridgeman, who is a talented and interesting story teller, has decided to follow this kind of deceptive marketing. As a reader I felt that my intelligence was insulted by the repetition and the stories of these heros were therefore diminished a bit. I hope that some charitable organization benefits from the inflated charges collected for this "series". You can and have done much better, Hallee.
